It's that time of year again And as the sun starts to make longer appearances at the weekend the Jinxers start crawling out from under the stones where they have over wintered As the banter starts to flow again on the Jinx thread on Maggotdrowners it can mean only one thing
The Jinx series 2010 is rolling into Rolfs for match 1 of the 6 match series
All 6 matches this year are being held at Rolfs lake in Oxfordshire

As in other years the Jinx series is being run as an individual series and also a pairs series This year Malc has also changed the sections around and we will be fishing to the Rolfs winter league sections Which will remove the chance of Peter someone drawing the flyer peg 13 every match But it will make the series much fairer and give everyone a chance to draw a decent peg in each section The eagle eyed amongst you will notice that the old boy Fred Parker is on the pairs list twice We all thought Malc was trying to kill him off by making him fish 2 pegs each match but it turns out that there is some logistical reason for him to be in 2 pairs teams Malc did go into it at great length to try and explain but unfortunately the only person that understood the reasoning was Malc strange that Gemma has acquired a little trophy that she will be handing out at the end of each match She will choose the most deserving person from the list of people that she Minxes in the match to have the hat to wear for the next match There's going to be a lot of worried people this year And no doubt a lot of embarrassing photographs too Steve had the dubious pleasure of wearing the hat of shame for the first match as he was unfortunate to be on the wrong side of a Minxing dished out by Gem at the maggotdrowners match at Lindholme a few weeks ago Eeek! First a range of head wear Now a line of clothing What's next ? Box stickers and a new range of luggage
As the draw is not until 11.30 today I got up and pottered about sorting gear out and loading the car and after a nice quite drive pulled into Rolfs car park at just gone 11am a few of the Jinx crew were there already with more pouring into the venue every minuet all eager to meet greet and generally take the pee out of old friends The lake was looking in fantastic condition and John and Pauline Bennett were there to meet everyone As we stood about chatting waiting for the draw Mugger Morton seemed to be a bit keen to tell us about some girl called Chelsea who was playing a rounders or tennis match in Portsmouth or somewhere ? But I'm not to up on these minor sports in fact to be honest I'm not sure if it's really a sport as to quote Jezzer Clarkson "if it don't burn fossil fuel it's not a real sport" Malc eventually got the draw under way late as usual
I came away from the draw bag with peg 24
not too bad a draw as I should at least catch a few fish
My plan today is to fish 1 line out in front at 6m
Another in the margin on the bush to my right
And 1 in front of the empty platform on peg 25
Next door on peg 26 was Simon
And to my right on peg 23 was Paul Roberts who had Jayne with him for support
Further down the car park bank was Steve sporting his nice new pink hat and unfortunately on the next peg to him was Gemma so he could be in for a mega Minxing if he gets beaten off the next peg by the minx while wearing the hat
On the all in I shipped a pot of pellets out to 6m and as I looked around I saw Simon on peg 26 with yards of elastic up in the air having a right 2 and 8 with a fish which eventually got under his platform and managed to get off Looking to my right I could just see Peter on peg 21 also with his elastic at full stretch but unfortunately the hook pulled at the landing net and he too lost the fish I shipped a 6mm Red liver soft hooker out to 6m and dropped it in over the top of my feed which by now had a few bubbles coming from around it I've changed all my Rolfs rigs onto 0.20mm line now ready for the warmer months and today I am fishing a size 16 B911 hook tied direct to 0.20mm Silstar line under a 0.3g Jon Walker diamond float set to fish at dead depth and no sooner had it hit the bottom the float buried and my elastic was streaming out I soon had the fish under control and slipped the net under a fine looking common of about 6lb Simon on peg 26 was fishing shallow with what looked like a boillie on the hook and it certainly seemed to be working as he was hooking fish after fish he was loosing a few too but was also getting a few in the net and some on the board as well I was expecting my 6m swim to be solid following my first put in but that was my lot the swim had fish in it but I couldn't get another bite I tried all the different baits I had but nothing doing Paul on peg 23 was struggling to get a bite fishing out in front at 8m too I gave both the margin swims a try but had no indications at all from either swim Looking round the lake most people seemed to be struggling Malc on peg 9 had trodden on his number 4 section when he was setting up which got his day off to a bad start Peter was starting to blend into the bushes as since his initial bit of excitement had been sat watching a motionless float
The only person who was catching was Simon and there were a few rumours that a few people were catching in the little lake too I decided to add a few sections of pole and try fishing out at 13m
It proved to be a good decision as again I had an instant bite this time on a 6mm cube of meat
And soon had another fish of around 6lb in the net I stayed out at 13m for the rest of the match and managed another 4 fish in the net and 3 weighers on the board Simon was still bagging and a few other people had started to catch as the day went on but the fishing was hard for most people It certainly fished strangely today as I would have expected to catch close in on banded pellet but I couldn't buy a bite from either margin swim and the only place I could catch was at 13m on the deck with meat on the hook I did hook 1 fish shallow but I think that was foul hooked as the hook pulled on the way in So when Malc called the all out I had 3 fish on the board and 6 in the net which I reckoned was around 50lb if I was lucky The Minx had 3 weighers on the board for just over 30lb so I knew I was safe from a Minxing but there were a lot of worried looking faces around the lake as people packed up I soon had my gear back in the car and set off round the lake to help with the weigh in
Geoff after his long drive down form Scotland for the match took the early lead with 87lb from peg 37 But my pairs partner Ade soon over took him with a fine 100lb from peg 2 way to go partner Ade managed to hold the lead right round to peg 7 where Ant put 126lb on the scales to take the lead From then on the weights went down hill fast Poor old Peter suffered a slight bit of ribbing by the other chaps when his weight came up a tad short and he found himself part of a Minxing massacre At my peg I managed to put 51lb on the scales Next to weigh was Simon and he put a fine 156lb on the scales for first place on the day Last to weight was Dai on peg 32 and he came close to another Rolfs ton today with 99lb 4oz Once all the results were sorted the only thing left to do was for the Minx to choose who would receive the Pink hat for the next match
Drum roll
No contest really Step forward Peter(mugger)Morton

As for the pairs well thanks to Ade we are sitting in 2nd place on 12 points behind Malc and Simon on 10 points Once again it has been a great start to the Jinx series with great weather and plenty of light hearted banter in great company The fishing wasn't all it could have been but that's the nature of the beastRoll on Match 2
