Faye's Match

Faye's Match

Today I am down at Monk lakes just outside Maidstone in Kent for a maggotdrowners charity match run by Bill G in aid of Post Pals

which is the chosen charity of Faye a young girl that the Maggotdrowners took to their hearts last year
The match is being run on lakes 2 and 4

If I'm honest I'm not really looking forward to the match today as the weather forecast is for terrible wind and rain all day
I set off a bit earlier today as it's a Bank Holiday Monday but I needn't have worried as the roads were quite , probably due to the impending storms that are forecast for later on
As I pottered down the M20 enjoying the piece and quite I was rudely awoken as the car was thrown across the road by the turbulence from a Green blur hurtling it's way towards Maidstone with Mugger Morton at the helm
I eventually arrived at Monks and soon had a bacon roll and a cup of coffee in my hand and soon all the other Maggotdrowners started rolling up and the banter started to flow
Faye would not be attending this year as she is not too well and back in Addenbrooke hospital  But her father Dave has turned up for the day to meet everyone and report back to Faye in hospital on the days events
Once everyone had arrived Bill got the draw under way as we all made our way in to the draw Tony and I found ourselves close to the front of the queue while we were waiting for the draw we were discussing where we wanted to be today and both said lake 4 would be the best draw
But being at the front of the draw wasn't in my plan for today and needless to say we both drew on lake 2 and even worse both out on the causeway
I drew peg 58 and Tony had peg 74 which was right behind my peg on the other side of the causeway

As I arrived at my peg I noted that I would be sat facing into the wind which was now starting to blow a hooley

I plumbed up a swim out in front at 6m

But it was a nightmare trying to ship the rig out without it tangling
I also plumbed up a line in the left hand margin

And set up the feeder as I suspected that I would be spending a fair bit of time watching a tip today
As Bill called the all in the heavens opened and we were treated to a hail storm
I must say that I have never been so cold before

I had 1 Gudgeon in the net that I caught in the margin swim and 2 Carp that I had caught on the feeder and was so cold I had to get up and walk across to the cafe to use the loo and get a coffee and I never walk during a match
Back on my peg I gave up on the pole and decided to spend the rest of the match sitting on the feeder
Geoff P was next door to me on peg 57 and had driven down from Scotland for the match unfortunately Geoff was struggling in the wind to get any sort of presentation on the pole but he was getting the odd fish

Thankfully Bill eventually called the all out
I ended up with 9 Carp and 1 Gudgeon for 15lb 08ozs for 4th in section and nowhere in the match
Mutley won the match from peg 67 with a fine weight of 101lb

I soon had my gear packed away and back in the car then I was off to the cafe for a burger and a coffee
Once everyone got back to the cafe Bill sorted the results out then got the raffle under way
I had a bit more luck in the raffle and won 2 prizes I did have 3 winners but put 1 back
The raffle raised a fantastic £216 and a big thanks should go to Jean and Pat who walked round the lakes and managed to sell over 1000 tickets

Also a special mention for Simon Elsey and indiginous as they raised a very impressive amount of sponsorship money for the cause, simon raising a very tidy sum of £180 and brian [indiginous] raising £142
So with that added to the money that Monk lakes gave back from the peg fees we ended up with a fantastic sum of £853 for the charity
Also there is another £250 from an auction that Malc is running on Maggotdrowners in aid of Fayes charity to add to the total Making an overal total of £1100

All in all the day wasn't a total waste as we made a lot of money for Fayes Charity Post pals
But it certainly ranks high up in my all time "worst days fishing list"
I was certainly glad to get home

Knowing what a grueller you had, I did wonder if you were going to blog this one Clive. Good effort from an uncomfortable peg on a lousy day weatherwise though fella.

As you say, the saving grace was the cash raised for PostPals.
